Assynt

North-west Scotland

Assynt

Isolated peaks rising straight out of bog and loch. The strangest landscape in Britain.

Assynt looks unlike anywhere else in the UK. Suilven, Stac Pollaidh and Quinag stand as separate blocks on a plateau of Lewisian gneiss, some of the oldest rock in Europe.

The road network is thin and slow, which is the point. Base yourself at Lochinver for a few days and walk rather than drive.

Facilities are limited: one supermarket, a handful of cafés, fuel that closes early. Arrive stocked.
