Planning a route you'll actually enjoy
Why most first itineraries are twice too long, and how to build one that isn't.

The commonest mistake in road-trip planning is treating driving time as travel time. It isn't. Driving is the cost, not the experience.
A workable rule: no more than three hours behind the wheel on any day, and one static day for every two moving ones.
Anchor the route on things you actually want to do — a walk, a coastline, a market — and let the driving connect them rather than define them.
Leave the last two days unbooked. Weather, mechanical faults and the place you unexpectedly love all need somewhere to go.
